About the Project
The 3D PrintWorks program is a multi-site, hands-on workability initiative designed to provide students in special education with meaningful vocational training through 3D printing technology. Implemented across participating school sites, this program integrates career exploration, technical skill development, and real-world business practices to support students’ transition from school to post-secondary employment and independent living.
Students will engage in a structured, classroom-based enterprise where they actively participate in all phases of a small business. This includes designing products using beginner-friendly 3D modeling software, operating and maintaining 3D printers, managing materials and inventory, and preparing finished products for distribution or sale. Students will also develop communication and interpersonal skills through customer service tasks, such as taking orders, responding to feedback, and collaborating with peers and staff.
Each student will rotate through clearly defined job roles, including Designer, Production Technician, Quality Control Specialist, Inventory Manager, and Sales Representative. This rotation allows students to explore individual strengths while building a wide range of transferable job skills.
Meet the Project Coordinator
Christie Dougherty
I have been teaching special education at Mountain Empire Unified School District for the past 18 years and currently teach an Extensive Support Needs (ESN) class at the middle school. In addition to my classroom responsibilities, I served two terms as our union chapter president, where I wrote the special education section of our current contract. That work helped create a stronger working environment for teachers while improving support and learning opportunities for students with special needs. The inspiration for my funded project came from my desire to give students meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that build both scientific knowledge and real-world skills. Creating a 3D printing lab will empower students to explore STEM concepts, develop entrepreneurial skills by designing and selling products, and discover new possibilities for their futures.
