About the Project
Portola Springs Elementary serves a vital role within the Irvine Unified School District by hosting Extensive Support Needs (ESN) classrooms. However, a significant “participation gap” exists: while our highly impacted population is physically present in PE, they often remain sidelined due to a lack of specialized equipment. Research in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance emphasizes that without deliberate environmental modifications, students with severe disabilities face “prompt dependency” and social isolation. This project addresses the urgent need for autonomy-building technology. By providing tools like switch-activated launchers and sensory-integrated equipment, we transition students from passive observers to active participants. This is critical because physical activity is a primary driver for neuroplasticity and social-emotional regulation in students with complex profiles. The benefit is two-fold: students with ESN gain the physiological benefits of movement and the psychological boost of “self-efficacy”—the belief in their own ability to succeed. Simultaneously, it fosters a truly inclusive culture at Portola Springs, where grade-level PE becomes a shared experience of achievement rather than a reminder of limitation.
Meet the Project Coordinator
Melody Moran
As an itinerant Adapted Physical Education Specialist in Irvine Unified and the Special Olympics Liaison for Portola Springs Elementary, I am honored to support students of all abilities daily. Having recently represented itinerant special education providers as a Teacher of Excellence, I am deeply committed to advocacy and creating highly inclusive environments. My personal journey as the mother of a child with a disability inspires my work, showing me firsthand the life-changing impact that dedicated educators can make. This IFT grant will fund switch-activated assistive technology, empowering my non-ambulatory students to independently play and score goals rather than relying on hand-over-hand assistance. I am incredibly grateful to CTA for believing in this vision and helping my students experience their own independent moment to shine alongside their cheering peers.
