About the Project
The “Unified Through Sports!” project will expand inclusive sports opportunities across San Bernardino City Unified School District by launching Unified PE classes and intramural teams where students with and without disabilities play together. Supported by the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools model, the program begins with sports as a foundation for building friendships, leadership, and a school-wide culture of inclusion. Activities will include campus-based practices, districtwide tournaments, and a Unified Sports Day. The project brings together students, teachers, families, and district leaders to promote equity, belonging, and student empowerment. Through shared goals and teamwork, all students, especially those with disabilities, will gain meaningful opportunities to participate, lead, and thrive.
Meet the Project Coordinator
Sarah Apacible-Holm
My name is Sarah Holm, and I am a demonstration teacher in San Bernardino City Unified School District. I currently teach in the moderate-severe special education program at San Bernardino High School. As a demonstration teacher, I support new and veteran teachers in the district. I have also been a part of many committees with the special education department, including working on our framework for students with moderate-severe disabilities, curriculum selection, and the new Alternative Pathway to a Diploma. I am passionate about providing students with disabilities the opportunities to have a full school experience, including participating in electives, clubs, and after-school activities with their peers without disabilities. This is what led me on the path to partnering with Special Olympics and bringing Unified Champion Schools to my high-school, and I am excited to work with colleagues in my district to bring Unified Sports to other schools.
