About the Project

Arts integration addresses equity and engagement in science instruction. Our diverse district, including Anatomy and Physiology, often relies upon memorization and text-heavy pedagogy, which limits student access based upon academic backgrounds or language proficiency. This project addresses this limitation by capitalizing on social, academic, motivational strengths our students already possess. Arts integration provides multiple ways for students to demonstrate their learning and mastery of anatomy, by allowing many different methods for students to show what they have learned. Struggling students will still have the opportunity to succeed even if challenged in traditional settings. Making rigorous content more accessible and relevant to students, this project helps close opportunity gaps and ensures that all students capitalize on their experiences and have meaningful success opportunities. Arts integration is truly a culturally responsive pedagogy.

Meet the Project Coordinator

Nathan Konrad

My name is Nathan Thies Konrad and I've been an educator at the high school and collegiate level since 2001. I've been teaching at Mt. Eden High School in Hayward Unified School District since 2018. During that time, I've taught Physics, Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, and Chemistry for HUSD. Currently, I'm teaching Anatomy and Physiology. I have found that students get involved when they can express themselves artistically during academic pursuits, inspiring me to pursue this project.
