About the Project
Art For the Heart is a specialized art-based grief support program designed for elementary school students (grades K-5). The project addresses the critical need for accessible and age-appropriate grief processing tools within educational settings. The program will utilize various art mediums—including drawing, painting, sculpture, and collage—as non-verbal channels for children to express complex emotions related to loss. The curriculum is structured into weekly sessions that guide students through creative exercises specifically designed to help them identify feelings, commemorate loved ones, and develop healthy coping mechanisms. The ultimate goal is to foster emotional resilience and provide a safe, expressive outlet that supports the overall well-being and academic success of grieving students.
Meet the Project Coordinator
Stephanie Crocker
I am a Second Grade teacher at Canyon Oaks Elementary, where I also proudly serve as the NVEA union site representative. My commitment to our school community is driven by a deep recognition of the need for greater grief awareness, which led me to help our school become a certified Grief Sensitive School through the New York Life’s Grief Sensitive Schools Initiative. Through my upcoming 'Art for the Heart' project, I am channeling this dedication into fostering emotional well-being by providing students with creative outlets to navigate their experiences. I believe that cultivating a healthy relationship with grief is essential for developing our students into compassionate, resilient adults. Ultimately, my goal is to continue building a supportive, grief-informed culture for all the families we serve.
