About the Project

This project creates a dynamic classroom library program designed to foster a love of reading and improve literacy skills. Students will participate in read-alouds, peer book talks, and book clubs, and actively curate, organize, and maintain the collection. Through literacy challenges and regular reading celebrations, the program encourages student voice, collaboration, and critical thinking. This project builds a supportive reading culture that promotes equity and engagement by promoting culturally relevant literature and involving families.

Meet the Project Coordinator

Maria Martinez

I am a 4th grade teacher at Hubbard Media Arts Academy in the Alum Rock Union School District in San Jose, CA. I serve on the executive board of the Alum Rock Educators Association as the  secretary, chair of the political action committee, and I also support new members and the organizing committee. I’m passionate about fostering a love of reading and improving literacy in my classroom. My goal is to build a diverse and engaging classroom library that reflects my students’ identities and interests. With access to high-quality books, students can develop strong reading skills and a lifelong love of learning.
