About the Project

Coliseum Champions is an inclusive sports initiative at Coliseum Street Elementary designed to dismantle the pay to play barriers affecting 90% of our student body. By partnering with CF Fitness, we move beyond traditional recess to establish a Unified Sports model that integrates our 253 students including those in Special Day Classroom Autism Core and Preschool for All Learners. This project transforms our playground into a leadership laboratory by weaving our Leader in Me culture directly into athletic play. Students practice being proactive as they transition from adult led drills to serving as captains and peer mediators. These student leaders facilitate huddle reflections and practice seeking first to understand to resolve interpersonal conflicts.

Meet the Project Coordinator

Melissa Meikle

I am the Community School Coordinator at Coliseum Street Elementary with a background in Special Education and a deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered learning. I serve in school leadership by collaborating with staff, families, students, and community partners to strengthen systems that support the whole child. Inspired by my belief that every student deserves equitable access to leadership, wellness, and enrichment opportunities, I developed Coliseum Champions, an inclusive sports initiative that removes barriers to participation while fostering leadership through play.
