About the Project

The EMS Fashion Show is a multidisciplinary, project-based learning (PBL) experience that integrates science, engineering, art, and literacy through student-designed fashion. Students will explore scientific concepts such as electromagnetic waves, energy transfer, sustainability, and material science, and transform this knowledge into wearable designs that communicate complex ideas through visual storytelling. Working in collaborative design teams, students will conduct research, prototype models, test materials, and refine their creations through critique and iteration. Students will develop public speaking and professional skills by preparing for a public exhibition. The EMS Fashion Show will empower students to see themselves as designers, engineers, and scientists.

Meet the Project Coordinator

Kathy Doan

We are a middle school science teacher team at Lobo School of Innovation, where we teach NGSS-aligned science and STEAM through a combination of Project Based Learning and traditional classroom experiences. As educators committed to creating authentic, hands-on learning opportunities, we design projects that connect academic standards to real-world challenges and student interests. The Electromagnetic Spectrum Fashion Show was inspired by our desire to transform an abstract science concept into a creative, collaborative experience where students could apply their understanding of electromagnetic waves through fashion design, research, and presentation. This project reflects our belief that students learn science best when they have the opportunity to create, collaborate, and share their learning with an authentic audience.
