About the Project

This project addresses a critical need to support English Learners who often feel isolated or left out of the broader school community due to language barriers, limited opportunities for authentic interaction, and a lack of connection between their lived experiences and school culture. Many ELD students may struggle to participate fully in class or build relationships with peers and staff, which can impact both their academic success and sense of belonging. This project creates intentional opportunities for inclusion by engaging students in shared, real-world experiences—such as visits to a clothing store, a restaurant, and cultural sites—where they can interact with community members, collaborate with classmates, and connect with teachers in meaningful ways. These experiences foster relationship-building, boost confidence, and validate students’ identities, helping them feel seen, valued, and included. By strengthening these connections, the project supports not only language development but also a stronger sense of belonging within both the school and the wider community.
