About the Project

Using writing and art, this grant provides opportunities for the third-grade students at Dena Boer Elementary School to learn about the past through communication with senior citizens in our community. The project connects residents of Hospitality House or other senior care center through letter writing and art. Students learn how to read and write in cursive and make connections to others. In return, the seniors feel connected to the youth, as well as sharing their past experiences with the third-graders. With the assistance of a guest artist, students learn about famous artists and create artwork to give to the senior citizens. After designing a heart rock and donating it to the facility to brighten their yard and outdoor seating area, students will create three holiday projects to present to the residents, as well. The project concludes with an art project, designed with the assistance of our guest artist, and a trip to the center to deliver our end-of-the-year gifts.
