About the Project

The “JBHS Cultivators of Growth Expansion and Accessibility Improvements” project enhances an existing school garden program for students in the Independent Living Skills Moderate/Severe Special Education program at John Burroughs High School. The grant will fund a drip irrigation system, accessible raised garden beds, and adaptive workstations to improve student access and independence in the garden.

Students will engage in hands-on learning to build daily living and job skills while participating in every stage of the project—from planning and installation to maintenance and harvest. The initiative promotes student voice, equity, and inclusion by increasing access for students with physical limitations and supporting long-term sustainability. It also strengthens school and community relationships through collaboration, cultural representation, and outreach events like a Garden Open House.

Meet the Project Coordinator

Erin Berich

My name is Erin Berich and I've been teaching at John Burroughs High School for over 25 years. I teach students in the Independent Living Skills special education important life skills that will help them become independent and productive members of their community. With our grant funds received this year we will continue to build upon the success of our school garden that was originally funded through IFT a few years ago. The opportunities afforded to our students with this project are immeasurable. I'm excited to build upon our already successful garden program and watch it continue to help our students thrive.
