About the Project

This project expands the Link Crew peer mentoring program at San Fernando High School to support 9th-grade students in their transition to high school through relationship-building, academic support, and inclusive campus engagement. Upperclassmen will serve as Link Leaders, guiding freshmen through orientation, classroom visits, and regular mentoring activities. The program will incorporate a new Maker Space to provide hands-on opportunities for collaboration and creative expression, fostering connection and a sense of belonging. By emphasizing leadership development and cross-grade relationships, the project promotes a positive school culture and student success.

Meet the Project Coordinator

Erin Mettlen

My name is Erin Mettlen, and I am honored to serve as a dedicated educator at San Fernando Senior High School, where I teach 9th grade biology and health. Additionally, I am the Coordinator for our Link Crew program, which is currently in its second year of operation. In my leadership capacity, I also fulfill the role of PBIS Coordinator at my school, where I analyze data, make program recommendations, and oversee the Tigers of the Month reward system. The beginning of the Link Crew program was motivated by the observed need for mentorship and support among our incoming ninth-grade students. Unfortunately, such support is contingent upon financial resources that my school just doesn't have right now. So I applied for this grant to ensure that my older Link Crew students have access to the necessary resources, rewards, and materials, enabling them to serve as exemplary mentors for our ninth graders.
