About the Project
Chaffey’s CIM site has long had a need for creative endevours that allow our incarcerated students and their community a chance to express themselves to a larger audience. By teaming up with our Rancho-based students, our incarcerated students will benefit from the experiences of their non-incarcerated counterparts. As well, our Rancho students will benefit from experiences and perspectives that our incarcerated students will bring to the project. Our literary journal will focus on an aspect of social justice, and both groups will have a chance to broaden their perspectives by working with such a different group of students. This project is important as this is the first literary magazine produced by CIM students—this will be our chance to help establish an educational culture that values artistic expression in CIM. Prisons such as San Quentin have long histories of producing student-created media, and this is made possible because of the culture they have spent decades fostering. In turn, this culture in CIM will benefit our non-incarcerated students by helping us create a more justice-focused culture across our college sites.
Meet the Project Coordinator
Jennifer Moirao
I am a 3rd-grade teacher at Amador Elementary School, where I teach all core subjects while integrating executive functioning and social-emotional learning into my classroom. In addition to teaching, I help lead our school's PBIS initiatives and serve as a swim coach. My project was inspired by working with students who struggle with executive functioning skills and seeing the positive impact that explicit brain-based instruction can have on their confidence, behavior, and academic success.
